While driving north on Kingshighway to MLK in order to investigate Pagedale's Abandoned Lever Soap Factory, a group of watchful urbanist-citizens saw smoke bellowing from North St. Louis' Fountain Park Neighborhood.
Concerned that the conflagration involved the wonderful crown of Fountain Park, we were relieved, albeit saddened, to see the victim. As the building was listed as vacant since 2007, the catalyst could be anything: children, the homeless, the owner, fireworks, an act of Paul McKee, the ghost of Mayor Joseph Darst, etc. An exciting respite from labor, engaging in stimulating urban exploration, began with a depressing tone.
There was more than barbecue smoking this Labor Day 2008.
An example of how only a mile of city space can be a world apart.

wow... that fire was only a block and a half from my house... i was mowing the lawn at the time so i guess that's why i didn't hear the fire trucks... and, unless i'm driving, i really don't pay much attention to fire trucks....

I used to marvel at the houses along Bayard as I waited to be let in the school to pick up my daughter. That one had some nice details ...
for shame.
It really spoiled my day.
